ENG 100 Assignment #3: Film-Based Argument Due: draft #1 posted to blog by 11:59 on 3/32 Hate towards Muslims after 9/11 attack In the film, Survivor, screenwriter Philip Shelby writes about Kate Abbott’s struggles with saving America from a terrorist attack. Abbott is a security service agent who learns of a plot to where a sniper will shoot a gas bomb in time square in an attempts to kill innocent civilians. Also, Abbott’s was forced to go on the run when she was framed for crimes she did not commit. Thesis statement: The attack on 9/11 should not justify American citizens being more suspicious towards all Muslims because not all Muslims are bad or a terrorist. First America believes in freedom of religion Support American should not not persecute the Islamic people for their religion instead we should uphold our notions of a melting – pot culture. Also in the first amendment, it says we are allow to think, express and act upon what we deeply believe. So why judge an entire nation for one person acts, I thought America is a land of peace but I thought wrong. Second reason Americans need to have equal treatment and fairness towards Muslims. Because the Muslim people are human too and there is a lot of white’s people that commit crimes worst than the Muslims people but they will never be categorizing has terrorist because they are not Muslims. Third reason the Islamic religion is a peaceful religion because they do not believe in nonviolence. Also, Muslims should not have to be judge of their religion, they should be judge of their personal action. For example, a white boy went to sandy hook elementary school and shoot all dose innocent children & teachers but his actions were not characterized as a terrorist act. Fourth reason the Islamic religion is a respectful religion that expected whoever want to know more about their religion. Also, Muslims are scared to because when they are traveling they must be search by a lot of securities. For example, the Muslim females wearing a hijab they would stop her for special searches at the security gate. Therefore, Americans only believes the negative stereotypes about Muslims instead of getting to know about their religion. Also, being a Muslim in America is like a heavy burden because you never know who is watching you. According to Pew research center the article Muslim Americans: No Signs of Growth in alienation or Support for Extremism says that 28% of Muslims being looked at with suspicion and 22% being called with offensive names. Overall 52% says that the government should increased surveillance and monitoring Muslims. Also, according to Pew Research Center estimate there were about 1.6 billion Muslims in the world at the year of 2010. In fact, the media make the Islamic religion look horrible due to the type of things they show. For example, when I was in New York l I was criticizing for being a Muslim and I remember I got jumped by six girls just because they find out I was Muslim. It was hard because my family was the only Muslim family in our block and people would look at us dirty or called us nasty names. We cannot blame all Muslims or the religion for the 9/11 attack because some of have no idea about it. There is a lot of Christians that had commit terrorists acts like the Ku Klux Klan but they are not considering as a terrorist when they attack abortion clinics and other innocent people. According to FBI Database Jewish acts of terrorism within the united state are more than the Islamic religion. A lot of terrorist claim to be Muslims which is unfair because it gives the innocent Muslims bad names. The Muslims people are loving and respecting people and they do not judge a person based on their actions. For example, when president trump says he was going to banned all Muslims to come to America, I thought it was very rude and un-American to want to a group of Muslims just because of their religion. In addition to the freedom of religion, America is a culture that flourishes with the infusion of multicultural citizenry so why they start judging about the Muslim people. In conclusion, the 9/11 attack should not make American citizens to be suspicious towards Muslims because in the movie survivor the sniper that was going to shoot the gas bomb in time square was not Muslim. Support Support In addition to freedom of religion, America is a culture that flourishes with the infusion of multicultural citizenry. In conclusion, in the movie survivor the sniper that was going to shoot the gas bomb at time square was not Muslim but the reason why I chose this topic majority of americans fear muslim ever since the 9/11 attack. 3/7/2017 0 Comments promptPrompt: Do the attack on 9/11 lead Americans to be suspicious towards the Islamic religion?

I believe in second chance because I remember when I was in 12 grade, I lost my dear aunt due to cancer and my mom got into a car accident. At that point my whole world fall apart because my Aunt was like a second mother to me and my mother accident just made it more worst. So, due to my aunt passing away and my mother accident I started flunking and not going to school. Imagine I was a straight as student and at that point I did not care so I stopped going to school. Then one day I got a phone called from my guidance advisor telling me that if I do not get my grades together that I would not be graduating with my class. Then she talked to my teachers if they can give a second chance and when they did my GPA in high school went from a 3.4 to a 4.0. if it was not for my second chance I would have went to summer school and not graduated with my class. My mother always tells me that every obstacle they’re always a second chance. 2/27/2017 0 Comments four mindsetsAfter reading the four academic mindsets, I feel like self-efficacy is for me. According to psychologist Albert Bandura , Self-efficacy is defined as one is belief in one ability to succeed in specific situations or accomplish a task. The article self-efficacy explains ‘’ Believing one can be successful is a prerequisite to putting forth sustained effort”. This is important to me the most in academic mindset because you cannot be successful in life if you cannot learn or accepted your mistakes. I had a lot of people in my family that told me I would never make through college and how I am going to end up just like my older sister. I am the only girl out of my mother’s children that went to college without dropping out. After hearing those hurtful words, I use it has a motivation to push myself hard. I proved them wrong by finishing high school and coming to Dccc. The fact that this is my second year to dccc it is a big blessing to me that I try so hard not to give up on myself. My determination and dedication helped me grow as a person and a student. I believe self-efficiency is the most important because without me having a growth mindset I would not be able to achieve my goals. 2/27/2017 0 Comments growth VS fixed mindsetA growth mindset students understands that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence. A fixed mindset students believe their basic abilities, their intelligence, their talents are just fixed traits. My Thesis statement: A growth mindset can make me become a better student even in a difficult situation because I have accepted that to learn from your mistake, you must have some failures in life. Also, learning from your mistake make you a better person because the more you work the better you will be successful in the future. 2/27/2017 0 Comments the article summaryThe article Teacher, Parents Often Misuse Growth Mindset Research, Carol Dweck Says professor Carol Dweck mentions about three conceptions that educators are misunderstand or misapply about the growth-mindset's concepts. The first one is praising effort alone. Praising effort alone is useless when the child is getting everything wrong and not making progress, instead she advises teachers and parents to praise a child's process and strategies. Next, telling kid to try harder is like hollow praises of effort. Instead of nagging the student, teacher should sit down and together find out what she or he hasn't done right. The last one is repeating mindset jargon. Dweck says that many teachers must change how they teach, offering more critical feedback and giving students opportunities to revise their work. In The Perils of "Growth Mindset Education" [...] by Alfie Kohn. It saying that instead of parents or teachers trying to fix their children or students, they should try fixing their systems of teaching. Also, she also points out that protecting kids from failures is better than good scores. They should be feel good about themselves anyway.
2/16/2017 4 Comments my hiraethHiraeth is a longing for a home to which you cannot return or a home which maybe never was.
My hiraeth is about the first time I visit my granny rose after two and the half years at Trenton New Jersey. It was a hot summer afternoon, I think I was about six or seven years old when I found out I was going to see Nana rose. My Nana rose is not the average grandmother because she will curse at you and beat your behind if she has to. Meanwhile the car ride to Nana house was long and boring because we have to hear uncle Ben tell his boring stories. A few hours later we pull up to this big beautiful white house, with garden of roses everywhere and we notice the drive way was packed with cars of our family members. As soon as uncle Ben parked the car I ran up to the porch to ring the door bell and jumping up and down with excitement. Within a few minutes, I see a head pop up at the window of the front door and I could hear her unlocking the doorknobs and deadbolt. When the open I look up it was aunt Jennifer standing there, my face look so disappointed that Nana was not the one that open the door. · me: where is grandma · aunt jen: do you know how to say hi · me: I don’t like you · Aunt Jen: Mimi you better get your daughter · My Mom: now Aria greet your aunty · Me: hi aunt jen now can you please excuse me, I must go find my grandma As I walk inside of the house I was amazed how beautiful and different grandma house looked. The walls were painted in lavender and white, the window curtains were lavender and white with a big flower on top of the table. I was so mesmerizing by how beautiful and simple the house looked that I did not notice my grandma in the corner staring at me. · Grandma: is that my beautiful grandbaby · Me: Nanaaaa I missed you so much · Grandma: me too baby girl & I can’t believe it has been two and half years · Me: it’s mommy fault Nana · Grandma: Mimi bring your ass in here now · My mom: yes mom · Grandma : don’t mom me and the next time you keep my grandbaby away from me it going to be a problem · My mom: yes ma’am As my mother was walking to the kitchen she looks at me and rolled her eyes I did not pay much attention because I was too busy looking at my beautiful grandmother. Nana rose came and hug me, she smells like lavender with a hint of coconuts. As we walk to the kitchen I see it was painted peach and then I notice this big glass table with pictures inside of it but when I walk towards the table, the pictures where my baby pictures. At that moment is when I realized I am finally home because grandma house was like my second home. The kitchen was filled with smells of food but the one smell that got my attention was my grandmother famous strawberry short cake and it took me by surprise because she only makes it when she must tell a bad news. I turn around to look for my grandmother to ask her why she bake the cake for but she was nowhere to be found so I walked up the stairs to see if she was in her room. As I was walking I hear noise coming from my grandmother room so I started to speed up but I got closer I hear my aunt jen and mom voice telling my grandmother she cannot sell the house. So, I push the door open then my aunt came to push me out but my mom blocked her. · My Aunt jen: Mimi you need to control this child · My Mom: leave her alone and you see why she don’t like you · Me: mommy is granny selling the house · My mom: yes, baby she is · Me: noooo she can’t sell the house · My mom: why not baby I looked at my grandma with so much tears in my eyes so she walked near me but I push her hands away and ran down the stairs to the backyard. When I went to the backyard I saw the tree house my late grandfather and grandmother help build. I climb up the tree and I notice nothing as change in my tree house. I thought to myself that I had so much memories in this house like why would grandma want to sell it. |
